A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to 37 years in prison for second-degree murder and other charges connected to his wife’s 2021 fentanyl overdose death.
Anderson County Judge Ryan M. Spitzer sentenced Robert Earnest Riffey Jr., 57, on Sept. 15 to what was described in a news release from 7th Judicial District Attorney General Dave Clark’s office as the “maximum sentence under the law.” Riffey was found guilty on June 30 of second-degree murder, possession of Schedule II drugs in a school zone, and possession of drugs with intent to deliver in a school zone following a three-day jury trial in Anderson County Criminal Court in Clinton.
“During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors argued for consecutive sentencing (sentences running one after another) because of the severity of the convictions and the defendant’s lack of remorse and accountability for his actions,” the DA’s release stated.
Court documents state that Riffey admitted to giving his wife, Michelle Ann Wright, 52, of Clinton, the drug that ultimately led to her death in March 2021. In his statement, he said he thought the drug was heroin.
The case was investigated by the Clinton Police Department and the 7th Judicial Crime Task Force. Assistant District Attorneys Sarah W. Keith and Brian M. Gilliam prosecuted this case for the state. Victim Witness Coordinator Katherine Sellers aided in the sentencing hearing.
